Tiered links and the anchor buffer hypothesis
A 2022 case examined a practitioner who claimed exact-match anchors are 'safe' if pushed to tier-2 links (links to your links) rather than directly to the money site. The case let us inspect that.
The money page carried a conservative ~10% exact-match profile. A separate tier-2 layer of ~300 links, aimed at the page's existing backlinks, was loaded with ~70% commercial anchors.
Over nine months the page rose from position 12 to 8 — a modest move, well within the range of normal aging, with no obvious lift attributable to the tier-2 anchors.
The honest read is that the tier-2 anchor loading produced no detectable signal in either direction. It neither helped meaningfully nor visibly hurt the money page's own ratio.
On one hand, this fits the view that anchor text influence attenuates sharply with link distance. On the other, the modest rise could equally mean the tier-2 work did something small we can't separate from aging.
Limitation: no control page, and tier-2 effects, if real, would be subtle and slow — hard to detect at this sample size.
Confidence: low that tier-2 anchor stuffing transmits meaningful anchor signal to the target.
Open question: does anchor influence decay continuously with link-graph distance, or drop off a cliff after one hop?
