Over-optimizing internal anchors: an overlooked case
Most anchor discussion fixates on external links; internal anchors are the neglected variable. A 2024 case from a 4,000-page publisher is instructive.
The site had auto-linked every occurrence of a target keyword to its money page — generating ~2,800 internal links, all with the identical exact-match anchor, to a single URL. The page had plateaued at position 9 for eighteen months.
The intervention: capping internal links to that page at one per source article and diversifying the internal anchor text across ~30 phrase variants. Total internal links to the page fell from ~2,800 to ~600.
Reported result at 14 weeks: position 9 to position 4, with a 60% rise in clicks to that URL.
The hypothesis is that excessive identical internal anchoring either diluted PageRank flow through bloat or read as a manipulation pattern internally. These are different mechanisms with different implications.
On one hand, the within-site change with clear before/after is clean. On the other, cutting 2,200 links also redistributed internal PageRank broadly — the gain may be a link-equity effect, not an anchor effect.
Limitation: two variables (count and anchor diversity) moved together.
Open question: was it the anchor over-optimization, or simply too many internal links bleeding equity?
