Topical authority: how to actually build it, not just write about it.
The idea is straightforward — cover a topic so comprehensively that Google treats your site as a reference source. In practice, most sites get it wrong.
What it doesn't mean: writing 300 articles loosely related to your niche.
What it actually means: mapping every subtopic, question, and use case within a defined subject area and filling those gaps systematically.
Practical approach:
1. Start with a broad pillar topic (e.g., "air purifiers")
2. Map subtopics: types, brands, use cases, buyer questions, maintenance, comparisons
3. Create a hub page that links to all subtopic pages
4. Build out each subtopic with its own cluster of supporting articles
Sites with strong topical authority rank faster, recover better from algorithm updates, and earn more natural backlinks.
Focus on depth within a narrow domain rather than breadth across many loosely related topics.
