The tiny mattress site making $2k a month on 9k visits
Month 1: most people chase traffic. I deliberately built a mattress-accessory site around low-volume, high-payout keywords instead. Mattress affiliate programs pay $50-$120 per sale — you don't need a million visitors.
Months 1-5: slow. Mattress keywords are insanely competitive even in the long tail, and I ranked for almost nothing. 4k visits, $180/month. I nearly quit, convinced the niche was too dominated.
The turn: I stopped targeting 'best mattress' anything and went after problem-aware queries — 'mattress too firm how to soften', 'why does my memory foam sag', 'mattress topper for back pain side sleeper'. People one step from buying a topper.
The setback: one of my best programs cut its payout from $90 to $55 mid-year — a 39% pay cut on my top earner overnight. I replaced it with two competing programs and split traffic.
Month 11: 9k visits — small — but $2,050/month. That's $0.23 per visit, where my old display sites made $0.02.
The takeaway: traffic is a vanity metric; revenue per visit is the real one. 9k buyers in a $100-payout niche beats 90k readers in a 3% Amazon niche.
