The 'declining conversion rate' that was actually growth
A growing DTC brand panicked when site-wide conversion rate slid from 3.1% to 2.4% over a quarter. An emergency redesign was on the table.
Before touching the site, they segmented by visitor type. First-time visitor conversion was steady at 1.8%. Returning visitor conversion was steady at 6.2%. Nothing had gotten worse. A successful top-of-funnel campaign had simply flooded the site with new, lower-intent traffic, dragging the blended average down.
They killed the redesign and instead built a retargeting flow for those new first-timers.
The blended rate stayed at 2.4% but absolute revenue rose 22%, because the new traffic was now being re-engaged instead of judged by one visit.
Lesson: a falling blended rate can mean your funnel is filling, not failing. Segment before you panic.
