Tier-two links lifted a stalled placement's pass-through by +2.1 positions
Controlled test on n=30 guest placements that had stopped moving rankings. We pointed 3-5 cheap tier-two links at each (links to the page hosting our link) to increase its crawl frequency.
Result after 60 days vs a 30-placement control:
— Treated pages: hosting page re-crawled 2.4x more often, target keyword +2.1 positions
— Control pages: +0.3 positions
The mechanism appears to be crawl, not equity — pages that were rarely re-crawled benefited most. Placements on already-active pages showed no difference.
Small sample, single niche. Tier-two link quality matters: spam tier-two showed zero lift.
Reserve tier-two links for placements on low-crawl-frequency pages — they do nothing on active ones.
