Myth: aggressive brand-safety keyword blocking protects performance.

Myth: aggressive brand-safety keyword blocking protects performance.
Wrong — it often guts it. A finance advertiser ran a 1,400-word native block list (death, crisis, attack, shooting…). Then their agency measured what it cost.

The list blocked 31% of available news inventory — including the business and markets sections where their high-intent audience actually read. Effective reach dropped, auction density fell, and cost-per-lead rose 23%.

When they swapped the blunt keyword list for sentence-level context analysis, blocked inventory fell to 6% with no measurable safety incidents. Cost-per-lead dropped back below baseline.

Keyword blocklists are a machete in a job that needs a scalpel. You're not buying safety, you're buying away your best readers. How much performance is your fear list quietly burning?
