Case study: linking 5,000 orphan pages got 3,100 indexed

Setup: A wiki had 5,000 pages with zero internal links pointing to them — reachable only via sitemap. Most sat in 'Discovered – currently not indexed'. I found them by comparing a Screaming Frog crawl (links found) against the full URL list.

What it did well:
— Orphans surfaced instantly as URLs in the sitemap-source list but absent from the crawl-found list
— Adding contextual internal links from high-authority hubs moved 3,100 of 5,000 into the index over two months

Where it fell short:
— The other 1,900 stayed out — internal links can't rescue genuinely thin pages
— Manual link placement was tedious; automated 'related links' modules diluted relevance

Verdict: 4.5/5. Orphan rescue is the most underrated indexing lever there is.

Best for: large content sites. Not for: small sites where everything's already linked.
