— Switching expired pages to real 410 Gone (not 404) cleared them from the index in ~3 weeks
— Googlebot reallocated crawls: live-listing crawl frequency rose noticeably in Crawl Stats

Where it fell short:
— GSC's soft-404 detection is opaque and slow to update; validation 'Started' sat for 10 days
— 410 is aggressive — we accidentally 410'd 300 pages that should've redirected, losing their links

Verdict: 4/5. Fixing soft-404s is one of the highest-leverage indexing cleanups on big sites.

Best for: listings/classifieds with churn. Not for: evergreen sites with stable URLs.
