The 1.2-second delay that cost six figures
A mid-size online retailer had a checkout that 'felt fine' to the team on office wifi. Conversion on the payment step, though, lagged the industry by a wide margin.
The clue came from correlating the performance report with the funnel: the payment step's server response time averaged 1.2 seconds slower than other steps, and abandonment there rose sharply for sessions above 2 seconds of wait. A third-party fraud-check call was the culprit, blocking the page render.
They moved the fraud check to run asynchronously after page load.
Payment-step abandonment fell from 19% to 12%, and the change penciled out to roughly $190k in annual recovered revenue.
Lesson: a slow step doesn't just frustrate, it converts measurably worse. Overlay performance data on your funnel and find the 1.2 seconds.
