Tighter tolerances in YMYL: a comparative read

Tighter tolerances in YMYL: a comparative read

A 2023 comparison set across two niches — outdoor gear and personal finance — hints that anchor tolerance is not uniform across topics. The same agency built structurally similar profiles in both.

In the gear niche, pages carrying ~30% exact-match anchors ranked comfortably in the top 5. In the finance niche, pages at the same ~30% ratio with comparable authority sat at positions 9-15, and two received manual-action notifications.

The interpretation: in your-money-your-life topics, where review is stricter, the threshold at which a commercial anchor ratio becomes a liability appears lower. The same input produced different tolerance.

On one hand, differential treatment of YMYL is well-established in quality-rater guidance, making a stricter anchor tolerance plausible. On the other, finance is simply more competitive and more aggressively spammed, so the same ratio may co-occur with a tougher neighborhood rather than a tougher threshold.

Limitation: two niches, one agency, no normalization for competitive density — a serious confound.

Confidence: moderate that tolerance varies by topic; low that we've measured the gap cleanly.

Open question: is the stricter line a property of the YMYL classification, or just of competition density?
