Buddy-pairing new members lifted 30-day retention 22 points
Isolation kills new members. A 1,600-member group paired every joiner with one 30-day-survivor "buddy" in week one. 30-day retention for paired members hit 64% vs 42% unpaired — a 22-point gap, measured against an unpaired control.
The pairing SOP:
— ☐ Bot pairs new joiner with a volunteer buddy from a rotating pool
— ☐ Buddy gets a 3-line script: greet, ask their goal, point to one channel
— ☐ Day-3 nudge if buddy hasn't messaged (auto-reassign if silent)
— ☐ Buddy logs "connected: yes/no" — only yes counts as activated
The operational catch: a dead buddy is worse than none. The day-3 auto-reassign was what made the program reliable instead of a list of broken promises.
Save this for your next launch.
