Q: 'Our deep products never rank. Could internal linking be the problem?'

Q: 'Our deep products never rank. Could internal linking be the problem?'

Short answer: Often yes — adding curated links to buried products lifted a whole set in one case.

The longer version: A kitchenware retailer had 4,000 products but only the first 24 per category got internal links from a real page; the rest lived 4+ clicks deep and were rarely crawled. They added 'Popular in this category' and 'Best for small kitchens' curated blocks on category pages, hand-linking 8-10 deeper products each. Log files showed crawl frequency on those linked products roughly tripled within a month. Over the next quarter, the curated products' average position improved from 28 to 16, and 60+ that had zero impressions started ranking. No new content — just better link paths.

Rule of thumb: A product Google can't easily reach is a product that won't rank. Curated internal links beat hoping pagination gets crawled.
