Stripping text off thumbnails, the mobile test
A source on a 500K travel channel told me they suspected their busy, text-heavy thumbnails died on small mobile screens. They tested 16 videos with text reduced to three words max, bigger imagery.
The numbers, CTR rose from 5.4% to 7.1%, and the lift was concentrated almost entirely in mobile impressions, where 70% of their traffic lives.
Word is the cluttered versions were technically fine on desktop but unreadable in the feed thumbnail size most people actually see.
For a channel like yours, design for the postage-stamp size, not the editing canvas. confidence: high, clean split test.
