Press-release anchors: tracking what they actually contribute

Press-release anchors: tracking what they actually contribute

A 2023 study tracked 50 URLs that had received syndicated press-release links — the kind that fan out across dozens of low-quality mirrors with identical exact-match anchors. The question: do those anchors count, hurt, or wash out?

Findings over a six-month observation:
— On average, a single release generated 40-90 near-duplicate links with one repeated commercial anchor
— URLs relying heavily on this source showed no ranking lift correlated with release volume
— But profiles where PR anchors pushed total exact-match above ~30% underperformed matched peers by a median 3 positions

The reading: search engines appear to heavily discount syndicated duplicate anchors for credit, while the aggregate ratio they create can still sit in a risk band. So PR links give little upside but can quietly inflate your exact-match percentage.

On one hand, the discount-but-still-counts-for-ratio asymmetry is plausible and matches Google's stance on PR links. On the other, sites leaning on PR syndication tend to be weak overall, confounding the underperformance.

Limitation: 50 URLs, observational, no isolation of the PR variable.

Open question: are syndicated anchors discounted to zero, or merely heavily damped, when computing the ratio?
