Deep dive: Walmart's load-time curve and what every fast point bought them
The question: is page speed a vanity metric or a revenue lever? Walmart's engineering team published one of the most-cited datasets on this — they plotted conversion rate against page load time across their own traffic and found a strikingly linear relationship in the critical window. For every one second of load-time improvement, conversions rose by up to 2%. And for every 100 milliseconds of improvement, they reported incremental revenue growth of up to 1%.
The mechanism isn't just impatience. Slow first paint extends the period where the user sees nothing actionable, and that void is where perceived risk spikes — a blank or janky screen reads as broken or untrustworthy before any content can reassure. There's also cognitive load from layout shift: when content reflows as it loads, the eye loses its place and must re-acquire the F-pattern scan path.
What makes Walmart's data so useful is that the gains were concentrated in the 2-to-4-second band — the difference between a 4-second and a 2-second load mattered far more per second than shaving a fast page faster. The curve is steepest exactly where most real-world landers live.
The practical implication for affiliate landers: speed work has the highest marginal return when you're moving from mediocre to fast, not from fast to instant. Above the fold specifically, the win is rendering a usable, message-matched hero before the heavy assets arrive — inline critical content, defer the carousel script, lazy-load anything below the first screen. The first second of perceived speed is the one Walmart's data values most.
TL;DR
— Walmart's own data: each 1s of load improvement lifted conversions up to 2%; each 100ms lifted revenue up to 1%.
— The curve is steepest in the 2-4s band — moving from mediocre to fast beats moving from fast to instant.
— Prioritize rendering a message-matched hero fast; defer scripts and below-fold assets to win the first perceived second.
