Link velocity spiked 8x, rankings dropped, then recovered in 71 days
E-commerce site, observational case, n=1 domain. The site went from ~12 referring domains/month to 96 in a single month after a PR push. Average position for 40 tracked keywords fell from 8.4 to 14.7 over the next three weeks.
Timeline:
— Week 0: velocity spike
— Week 3: position trough (-6.3 average)
— Week 8: positions recovered to 9.1
— Week 11: surpassed baseline at 7.2
This reads as a temporary instability, not a manual penalty — no message in Search Console, full recovery without disavow. The links were genuinely editorial.
One case; not proof of causation. But the V-shaped recovery pattern repeats in our data.
A velocity dip isn't always a penalty — wait 8 weeks before disavowing genuinely earned links.
