The restaurant that ranked on photos

The restaurant that ranked on photos

Meet a farm-to-table spot in Portland. Great food, great reviews, oddly buried for "restaurants near me" against weaker competitors.

We scrolled their profile photos. Eleven images, all uploaded the week they opened, three years stale. Meanwhile the place above them had 400-plus photos, half from customers, refreshed weekly.

Google reads photo freshness and volume as a vital sign — and this kitchen looked frozen in time.

We didn't touch the menu or the reviews. We set a rule: staff uploads three fresh photos a week — dishes, the room, the line out the door on a Friday. Then we put a small table tent asking diners to add their own.

Four weeks in, the ranking sat still and the owner doubted the whole thing.

Week six, customer photos crossed 60 and the listing climbed.

Position 8 to position 4 in two months. Profile views up 41%, direction requests up a third.

The lesson: a stale photo gallery whispers "maybe closed," and a living, customer-fed stream of images is a ranking signal hiding in plain sight.
