The plumber who shrank his way to the top
Meet a plumber in greater Atlanta. Ambitious. He'd listed a service area covering 30 cities and 1.4 million people — everywhere he'd ever consider driving.
Leads were thin and scattered. He blamed the market.
The market was fine. His signal was diluted. Spread across 30 cities, he was a faint blip everywhere and strong nowhere. The grid map showed green at his shop and red within four miles in every direction.
We cut the service area to the eight cities he actually wanted to work in. Then we built two local landing pages for his top two suburbs and earned five citations naming those towns specifically.
For two weeks the leads stayed flat, and he was nervous about cutting territory.
Then the proximity grid lit up green out to nine miles.
Leads in his target eight cities nearly doubled — 19 a month to 34 — while he gave up cities that never called anyway.
The lesson: a wide service area isn't reach, it's dilution, and you rank for the places you concentrate on, not the places you claim.
