Case study: one headline change lifted sign-ups by 41%
New to landing pages? Here is the smallest possible win. A beginner had a sweepstakes landing page (the page people see before the offer) with this headline: 'Enter Our Prize Draw'.
Out of 800 visitors, 96 signed up. That is a 12% conversion rate (conversion rate = the share of visitors who take the action you want).
They changed only the headline to: 'Get Your Chance to Win a $500 Gift Card (Ends Friday)'. Nothing else on the page moved. Same image, same button, same offer.
Next 800 visitors:
— 135 signed up
— That is a 17% conversion rate
— Up from 12% to 17%, a 41% relative increase in sign-ups
Why it worked: the new headline named the actual prize ($500 gift card) and added a reason to act now (Ends Friday). The old one was vague.
Here is the money math. At $1.20 per lead, the old page earned about $115 per 800 visitors. The new page earned about $162 per 800 visitors. Same traffic cost, $47 more income, every single time.
The lesson: be specific about the prize and give a gentle deadline.
Next step: rewrite your headline to name the exact prize. Change nothing else, and compare.
