Q: I added my keyword more times and rankings dropped. What went wrong?
Short answer: you optimized for repetition, not semantic relevance, which is the meaning and related terms, not raw keyword count. A recipes site did the opposite as a test.
They took 12 underperforming pages, removed keyword-stuffed phrases, and instead added related terms search engines associate with the topic (ingredients, methods, substitutions, equipment). Keyword density actually went down.
Result in 5 weeks: 9 of 12 pages improved, average gain of 5 positions, and they picked up long-tail traffic for terms never explicitly targeted.
In practice: modern ranking rewards covering a topic's full semantic field. Saying the keyword 14 times signals thinness, not relevance.
