The mechanic undone by an old phone number
Meet an independent auto shop in Sacramento. Twenty years at the same corner, beloved by regulars, sliding down the map pack for a year with no obvious cause.
We ran a citation audit and found the ghost: a phone number they'd dropped in 2019 was still alive on 40-plus directories. Old address fragments too, from a brief second location. Yelp, the old Yellow Pages clones, two data aggregators — all broadcasting conflicting facts about who they were.
Google trusts businesses it can verify consistently. This one looked like three different shops wearing the same name.
We corrected the name, address, and phone across 52 listings and killed two duplicate profiles entirely.
For five weeks the rankings did nothing, and the owner figured we'd wasted his money.
Week six, the line snapped upward.
From position 7 to position 3 over the next month, no new marketing at all. Calls up 22%.
The lesson: inconsistent citations don't just fail to help — they actively bleed trust, and cleaning up your old data can outperform any new campaign.
