"Longer videos get more watch time, so the algorithm prefers them"
A history-facts creator believed total watch-time minutes were the goal. His 3-minute videos sat at 6k views. He cut the same scripts to 45 seconds.
Median views: 41,000. The shorter cuts won by ~7x while generating far fewer total watch-minutes.
The mechanism people get wrong: the system optimizes completion rate, not raw minutes. A 3-minute video finishing at 30% reads as a worse signal than a 45-second video finishing at 75% — even though the long one logged more absolute seconds. Percentage completed is the comparison TikTok actually runs.
"More watch time" sounds rigorous and is exactly wrong. You're not banking minutes. You're proving viewers finish. Cut until the completion curve stays high.
