Pausing content updates during a volatility spike saved a position-3 ranking

During a 3-week stretch our SERP volatility tracker (daily rank movement averaged across the set) spiked on a 6,100-vol money page.

— Baseline daily volatility: 1.2 positions

— Pages in the tracked set: 220
— Our page's swing: position 3 to 9 and back, four times

The instinct was to rewrite. Instead we froze the page for 21 days and waited out the algorithm chop. It settled back to position 3.

A sister page that got rewritten mid-spike landed at position 11 and stayed there.

So what: editing during high volatility removes your baseline, so you cannot tell whether your change or the algorithm moved you.
