Their best content was on the page. It just wasn't in the page.
An e-commerce help center buried 70% of every article inside React-driven accordion tabs. Click to expand, content fades in. Clean UX, 4.6 average rating from users.
The symptom: rich, 1,800-word guides ranking on page 4 for queries the body answered word-for-word. Average position 38 across 240 articles. It made no sense — until I diffed the DOM.
Turns out the collapsed tabs weren't display:none. They were unmounted. The component only rendered a panel's children after a click event. No click, no DOM nodes. Googlebot, which doesn't tap accordions, indexed roughly 30% of each article — the one tab that happened to default open.
We changed nothing visual. We rendered all panels into the DOM on the server, then used CSS height/overflow to collapse them. Same accordion behavior for users, full content for crawlers.
Recrawl took six weeks. Average position moved from 38 to 14. Organic clicks to the help center went from 9,200/month to 31,000/month over the quarter.
The content was never thin. It was conditionally mounted.
