The tabbed content Google decided not to count

The tabbed content Google decided not to count

A software-comparison site put their richest content — feature breakdowns, FAQs, specs — inside tabs. Default tab visible, the rest hidden until clicked. Pages ranked for the visible tab's topic and nothing else.

The hidden content was in the DOM. We confirmed it: all the text rendered, present in the source, just inside display:none panels.

But a pattern emerged across queries. Phrases from the default-visible tab ranked. Phrases buried in hidden tabs barely registered. Google rendered the content, indexed it, but appeared to discount text the user can't see without interaction — and the team had hidden their most valuable, keyword-dense material behind tabs the crawler treats as low-priority.

Content behind interaction isn't invisible to Google, but it's not weighted the same as immediately-visible content — and stuffing your best material into hidden tabs buries your ranking potential.

Fix: the highest-value content moved into the always-visible flow; only genuinely secondary detail stayed tabbed.

Result: pages began ranking for the full breadth of their content, covered keywords up 4x, organic traffic to the comparison hub +66% over twelve weeks.
