Q: How do you get newly approved affiliates to actually post their first link?
Most approved partners never drive a single sale. For a program I ran, 71% of approvals went dormant inside 30 days. We tested one lever: a first-sale activation bonus.
What we set up:
— Flat $50 bonus on a partner's first qualifying sale, paid on top of normal commission
— Bonus only valid in the first 45 days after approval
— A three-email onboarding sequence ending with a reminder of the deadline
Result: activation (at least one sale in 45 days) rose from 29% to 47%. The bonus cost us about $1,900 across the quarter and brought in roughly $14k in new partner-driven revenue, several of those partners stuck around.
The caveat: a few people gamed it with a self-referral. We added a rule that the bonus only releases after the sale clears the refund window, which killed the gaming without hurting honest partners.
Got a question? Send it in.
