The question: after a Helpful Content hit, does removing low-value pages outperform improving them?

A documented affiliate case from the September 2023 HCU aftermath: a site with ~1,200 review/roundup URLs lost an estimated 70% of organic traffic. Over four months the operator deindexed or 301'd ~720 pages (60%), kept ~480 with demonstrable first-hand testing, and rewrote the survivors to add hands-on photos, test methodology, and named tester attribution. Reported result: traffic recovered to ~85% of pre-update levels by month six, with the surviving pages carrying more traffic each than before.

This aligns with the 'site-level' framing Google used in HCU messaging — that unhelpful content can drag the whole domain.

Counter-evidence: the December 2023 and March 2024 core updates landed inside this window, and some recovery may be reversion or update timing rather than the pruning itself.

Caveat: 'recovered to 85%' on a smaller page count means surviving pages roughly doubled. Survivorship is doing real work in that headline — fewer, stronger pages, not the same pages improved.

What we still don't know: whether 60% was the right cut depth, or whether improving rather than deleting would have done as well. There is no counterfactual site that kept all 1,200 pages and only improved them.
