"Front-load the keyword in your title or lose rankings."

"Front-load the keyword in your title or lose rankings."

Overstated.

A travel site ran the cleanest version of this test I've seen. 220 destination guides had titles like "The Complete Guide to Hiking in Patagonia." They flipped half to "Patagonia Hiking: The Complete Guide" — keyword first. Other half untouched.

Eight weeks: keyword-first group gained 0.3 positions on average. The untouched group gained 0.2. Statistically, a tie.

What did move CTR (not position) was making the first 30 characters legible on mobile, where titles truncate. The brand-front titles that buried the topic past character 40 lost clicks — not because of ranking, because the user couldn't see what the page was about in the cut-off preview.

So: front-loading helps the human reading a truncated SERP, not the ranking algorithm reading the full string. Different problem. Optimize for the eye, not the myth.
