A client lost 4 years of data to a single bad command
Media site, 280GB, ran on one VPS. Their "backup"? Nightly snapshots stored on the same disk. One rm -rf in the wrong directory and the snapshots died with the live data — same volume, same fate.
Recovery: zero files. Rebuild from Google cache and Wayback: 6 weeks, 9,000 of 14,000 articles lost forever.
A backup on the same server isn't a backup. It's a second copy of your single point of failure. Change my mind.
