Your backup system deserves the same engineering rigor as your product. Right now it gets none.
Think about it: your app has tests, monitoring, code review, staging, on-call. Your backups have a cron line someone wrote in 2023 and nobody has opened since.
The one system whose entire job is to save you when everything else fails is the one system you never test, monitor, or review.
Give it a runbook. Give it alerts. Give it a restore SLA. Put it in the postmortem template. Treat "can we restore?" as a first-class product requirement.
Until backups get real engineering, you're one bad day from gone. Change my mind.
