"Grow your followers and your views will grow with them"
A DIY account is the counterexample everyone needs. Went from 30k to 120k followers in five months — quadrupled the audience. Median views over the same window: 14,000, then 13,500. Flat. Slightly down.
The received wisdom treats followers as a reach multiplier. The data says they're nearly decoupled.
The mechanism: TikTok's distribution is interest-graph, not follow-graph. A new video gets tested on a cold cluster of strangers regardless of your follower number. Followers only matter for the thin slice who see it via the Following feed — which for most accounts is under 10% of views.
Followers are a trailing trophy, not an engine. You don't earn reach by banking followers; you earn followers by earning reach.
