We found 403 orphan pages and rankings exploded. Your sitemap is lying to you.
A SaaS docs site had 2,100 indexable URLs. The XML sitemap listed all of them, so everyone assumed they were fine. They weren't. A crawl showed 403 pages had zero internal links pointing in — reachable only via sitemap, which is not the same as reachable.
We added 1-3 contextual links to each from relevant high-traffic pages. No new content. Nothing else changed.
90 days later: 403 pages went from a median position of nowhere to 287 of them ranking in the top 20. Organic clicks to that cluster up 41%.
A URL in your sitemap with no internal links is a page Google tolerates, not a page Google trusts. How many orphans are hiding in your 'complete' sitemap?
