And then there was the hook where I learned to lead with proof, not promise. Old line: "In this video I'll show you how to write better hooks." A promise of future value. 40% at three seconds — people don't wait for value, they want it now.
Here's the thing — a promise is an IOU; proof is cash. I moved the result to the front: "From 2k to 200k views with one rewritten line — here it is."
The result: three-second retention went 40% to 69%, and completion climbed from 21% to 58%.
The lesson: don't promise to deliver value later in the video — show the outcome in the first breath, then explain how. Lead with the after-photo. The proof is the hook; the method is the reward.
