The dentist who fixed the wrong number
Meet a family dental practice in suburban Denver. 312 reviews, 4.9 stars — better than every competitor. And stuck at position 5.
The owner was baffled. More reviews than anyone, worse ranking than everyone.
We pulled the dates. All 312 reviews landed in two frantic bursts: a big push in 2021, another in 2023. Eighteen months of total silence in between. To Google, a dead review stream reads like a dead business.
We changed nothing about the score. We just asked two patients a day to leave a review — a printed card at checkout, nothing more. Steady. Boring. Twelve to fifteen new reviews a month, every month.
Four weeks in, the ranking hadn't budged.
Week seven, it cracked. Position 5 to position 3, then 2.
Review velocity beat review volume. Same average rating, fresh signal.
The lesson: Google doesn't ask how many reviews you have — it asks whether your business is alive right now, and a steady trickle answers louder than a flood.
