The boring truth: an exit popup treats the symptom and ignores the disease. People leave because the page failed to make the case — interrupting their departure with a discount often just trains them to wait for the discount next time, eroding margin on visitors who'd have converted at full price. The "recovered" conversions include cannibalized ones you can't see.
A popup that fires on exit is an apology for the page above it.
What the advice skipped: fix what makes people leave first. If the popup still helps after that, make the offer informational (a guide, a comparison) before you reach for a coupon that retrains your whole funnel.
