Moving from page 2 to page 1 took a median of 11 referring domains — but only 4 if intent already matched
Across 240 page-2 URLs pushed toward page 1 (n=240), referring domains needed to cross over varied with content fit.
When target content already matched search intent well:
— Median new referring domains to reach page 1: 4
When content was a weaker intent match:
— Median new referring domains needed: 11 (and 30% never crossed regardless of links)
Links accelerate a page that deserves to rank; they can't drag a poor-fit page onto page 1. Roughly a third of weak-fit pages plateaued no matter how many links arrived.
Fix intent match before buying links — the link budget to rank a good-fit page is less than half.
