I led with what it cost me, not what it was about
And then there was the script where I buried the stakes. Original: "Today I want to talk about email deliverability." The topic, stated flat. 39% at three seconds — a graveyard.
Here's the thing — "deliverability" is a topic, not a stake. Nobody scrolls for a topic. I led with the consequence instead: "One spam-folder mistake cost me 8,000 subscribers."
The result: three-second retention went 39% to 68%, and the video out-ran my channel average watch time by 44%.
The lesson: never open by naming the subject — open by naming what's at risk. "Email deliverability" is a syllabus. "This cost me 8,000 subscribers" is a story. State the wound before the topic.
