Engineering Permission to Post
Lurkers stay silent because the unwritten bar to post feels high. Your job is to lower it on purpose. Permission is designed, not hoped for.
The permission-design checklist:
☐ Pin a "no dumb questions" norm and have staff visibly break it first
☐ Run a weekly low-stakes thread where one-word answers are the point
☐ React fast to first-time posters — visible approval signals safety
☐ Showcase a beginner question being answered warmly, not just expert takes
☐ Never let an unanswered question sit on the latest screen
The trigger to act: a new member's first post. That moment sets their entire relationship with the space.
The metric: ratio of posters to lurkers. Healthy communities convert 10–20 percent of members into monthly posters. Below 5 percent, the bar is too high.
Save this for your next launch.
