WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: the name trap
This identical-sounding pair confuses almost every beginner. They are NOT the same thing.
WordPress.org gives you the free WordPress software to install on your own hosting. You're the landlord, full control, install any plugin or theme, but you handle setup and upkeep.
WordPress.com is a company that hosts a simpler version for you. Easier to start, but free plans restrict plugins, themes, and put their ads on your site.
A quick analogy: .org is buying a house you fully own and modify. .com is renting a furnished apartment, comfortable, but you can't knock down walls.
Most tutorials and "install any plugin" advice assume the .org self-hosted version. If a guide's steps don't match your screen, this mismatch is usually why.
In plain words: .org is self-hosted WordPress you control; .com is a hosted service with limits. Know which one you have.
