On LinkedIn, comments drive reach; on most networks, shares do — why the difference matters

On LinkedIn, comments drive reach; on most networks, shares do — why the difference matters

The question: which action — commenting or sharing — does more to spread B2B content, and does it vary by platform?

The dataset: cross-platform engagement analyses comparing how comments versus shares/reposts correlate with reach on LinkedIn versus X and Facebook.

Three findings:
— On LinkedIn, comments historically correlated more strongly with reach than reshares, because commenting reopens the post to the commenter's network and extends dwell.
— LinkedIn reposts (especially 'repost without thoughts') often added little reach — the algorithm appeared to discount frictionless resharing.
— On X/Facebook, the share/retweet remained the primary virality vector.

Caveats: platform mechanics change frequently and quietly; cross-platform comparisons mix incompatible metrics. Correlation, not causation. Treat as directional and time-bound.

What it means for B2B: a 'share this post' call-to-action is platform-illiterate on LinkedIn — you should be asking for a perspective in the comments instead. The action you solicit should match the network's amplification mechanic, not a generic social playbook.

Bottom line: ask for the action the algorithm actually rewards — on LinkedIn, that's a comment, not a repost.
