It was a normal weekly review when an analyst at a project-management tool noticed an absence rather than a presence: a fast-growing rival's mention volume had dropped 45% over three weeks, with no obvious cause.

Most monitoring is built to catch spikes. Silence slips through. She dug in. The rival hadn't shrunk — they'd paused all paid amplification mid-funding-crunch, and organic mentions were quietly carrying the load. Their share of voice was collapsing in slow motion while everyone watched for explosions.

She flagged it as a window. Her team leaned into comparison content and outreach to that rival's most vocal critics — about 60 accounts. Over the next quarter their own share of voice in the category rose from 18% to 26%.

The takeaway: monitoring tuned only for spikes misses the most actionable signal of all — a competitor going quiet. Silence is a strategy leak. Listen for the drops as carefully as the surges.
