Hot reminder: ranking for the brand's "coupon" keyword can cannibalize your own commission
Affiliates chase "[tool] coupon code" and "[tool] discount" because the intent is hot. You're often paying yourself less to win it.
Why this backfires:
— The buyer was already mid-purchase. You injected yourself at last-click to skim a sale the vendor would've closed anyway, and many programs now exclude coupon/brand-bidding traffic, paying $0.
— Coupon shoppers are the highest-refund cohort. You're selecting for the buyers most likely to claw back.
— You hand the customer a discount, which on percentage-based commissions directly shrinks the base you're paid on.
The value isn't intercepting people already holding their credit card. It's reaching the ones who haven't decided.
Verdict: coupon traffic converts great and pays you the least.
