"Countdown timers create urgency that converts." [DEPENDS]
Scarcity tactics spread from infomercials and Cialdini — limited time, limited stock, act now.
The boring truth: urgency works only when it's believable. A timer that resets every visit, or a "3 left in stock" that never changes, trains savvy buyers to distrust your whole page. The lift you get from fake urgency is borrowed against your credibility, and informed audiences (your audience) pay it back in skepticism.
Real deadlines convert. Theatrical ones convert once, then poison repeat traffic.
What the advice skipped: tie urgency to a real constraint — a cohort start date, a genuine inventory cap, a price that actually rises. If you can't, drop the timer and sell on the offer.
