I grew a niche site by accident through YouTube
Month 1: $11 domain on a woodworking sub-niche — building cutting boards. Saturated, low trust as a new site, ranking went nowhere for months.
Month 4: traffic flat at 900/mo. Out of frustration I filmed myself making a board on a phone, badly lit, and posted it to YouTube with my site linked.
Month 6: the video got 40k views. The setback: almost none clicked through to the site — maybe 200 people. YouTube traffic doesn't convert to web like everyone promises.
Month 8: but something else happened. Those 40k views built brand searches. People googled my channel name, found the site, and Google started trusting the domain more. Rankings for my buyer posts jumped from page 3 to page 1.
Month 12: 11k visitors/mo, $980/mo from affiliate sales of the exact tools in my videos. The video wasn't the traffic source — it was the trust signal.
The takeaway: video rarely sends meaningful direct clicks to a small site. Its real value is brand searches and entity signals that make Google trust your domain. Treat YouTube as an authority builder, not a traffic firehose.
