The single biggest mistake in digital PR pitches: leading with what you want instead of what the journalist gets.
Bad opening: "We've just published a comprehensive guide to affiliate marketing and would love for you to share it with your readers."
Good opening: "Your readers in the affiliate space are probably asking whether the recent Google update affects their commission strategies. We surveyed 400 affiliates last week — here's what they're actually seeing."
The difference: one is a request, the other is a story.
Journalists aren't doing you a favor by covering your content. They're looking for stories that serve their audience. Every pitch should answer "why does my reader care about this today?" before it answers anything else.
Keep pitches under 150 words. If the story needs more explanation than that, the hook isn't tight enough.
