On-page optimization needs to evolve as the search landscape changes. Competitive queries don't stay static. New pages enter the top 10. Google's understanding of intent for a keyword shifts. User expectations change.
What to audit on-page annually (or when rankings drop):
- Does the current title match how people are actually searching this keyword now? Check GSC for the actual queries driving impressions.
- Is the content format still matching what Google surfaces for this query? If listicles have replaced guides in the top 10, adjust.
- Has new information made sections of the page outdated?
- Are internal links on the page still relevant and functional?
- Do images still load fast and have descriptive alt text?
On-page SEO is maintenance, not just initial setup. The pages that hold rankings long-term are the ones that get regular attention, not the ones published and ignored.

The myth that on-page SEO is "set it and forget it" costs a lot of sites traffic they used to have.
