A Few Bad Reviews Won't Tank You
The question: do negative reviews of your brand lower your rankings through E-E-A-T? The fear is that any reputational blemish drags Trust down. The QRG's reputation method is more discriminating than that.
Per the guidelines, raters research reputation using independent sources — reviews, news, expert references — but they are instructed to weigh credibility and look for serious, well-documented problems, not isolated complaints. The threshold that lowers quality is a pattern of credible evidence of untrustworthy or harmful behavior, not the mere existence of criticism. A few angry reviews among many is treated as normal.
What the guidelines actually flag:
— Credible reports of scams, fraud, or harm — strong negatives.
— Volume and source quality matter; a regulator action outweighs anonymous gripes.
— Controversy or unpopularity, absent harm, is not the same as low Trust.
Counter-evidence: some brands do see declines after reputation crises. Caveat: those usually involve documented, widely reported misconduct — the high-credibility end of the scale — not ordinary negative feedback. Generalizing from crisis cases to 'reviews hurt rankings' overreaches.
The strategic error is overcorrection: suppressing or buying reviews to appear flawless can itself read as manipulation, a worse signal than honest mixed feedback.
What we still don't know: how, and whether, ranking systems operationalize the QRG's nuanced reputation criteria — the human method is well-described, the automated proxy for 'credible, serious problem' is not.
