Why does my brand-new site rank for nothing for months?
The "sandbox" question. There's no documented penalty box, but the delay is real and partly explainable.
Evidence:
— Google's John Mueller has said there's no formal sandbox, but acknowledged new sites take time as the system gathers signals.
— Ahrefs' large-scale study of ranking pages found the median top-10 page is ~2 years old, and most pages under a year old rank for very little — a strong age correlation.
— The plausible mechanism (confounder-aware): new domains lack crawl history, link signals, and engagement data, so Google ranks them conservatively until evidence accumulates.
Nuanced conclusion: the delay is mostly an information problem, not a timer. You speed it up by earning early links and covering a tight topic fully, not by waiting. Sites that publish broadly and thinly stay invisible longer because they never concentrate enough signal anywhere.
Method note: combines Ahrefs' "how long does it take to rank" dataset (~2M keywords) with public Google statements; observational only.
Confidence: medium
