Is there a minimum word count to rank?

Is there a minimum word count to rank?

Beginners hear "1,500 words minimum" everywhere. The evidence says word count is a symptom, not a cause.

Evidence:
— Backlinko and Ahrefs correlation studies repeatedly find longer pages rank higher on average — but correlation here is heavily confounded. Comprehensive topics naturally need more words; the words don't create the ranking.
— SERP teardowns of competitive informational queries show length tracks the query's information need: a definition query is won at 300 words, a buyer's-guide query at 2,500.
— Google representatives have stated directly there is no word-count threshold, and thin-but-complete pages routinely outrank padded ones.

Nuanced conclusion: count the questions the query implies, not words. Pad a 400-word answer to 1,500 and you add dilution and lower information density — the opposite of what helps.

Method note: drawn from public correlation studies (Ahrefs/Backlinko) plus manual teardown of 20 informational SERPs across niches; correlation strength is moderate, causation unsupported.

Confidence: high
